# Edit a PDF

The usual advice for editing a PDF is to convert it to Word, change it there, and convert back. That round trip rebuilds the layout from scratch: fonts get substituted, tables collapse, images shift, and a two-page document comes back looking like a different one. Editing the PDF directly avoids all of that, because nothing is reconstructed — the page keeps its original content and only the part you changed is different. Click a line of text to replace it, drop a text box into a gap, white out something that should not be there, or add a signature. Page structure is editable too: drag pages into a new order, rotate ones that were scanned sideways, duplicate a page, or delete it. When you are done, export. The file you get back is the original document with your changes written into it, not a re-rendered approximation of it.

## Tips

- **Edit the line, not the page**: Editing works one line at a time. For a whole paragraph, edit each line — the text does not reflow between them, so each stays where it was.
- **Whiteout plus a text box**: When a line refuses to edit — stretched, slanted or vertical text — cover it with whiteout and type a fresh text box over the top.
- **Undo is deep**: There are a hundred levels of undo, so experimenting costs nothing.

### Do I need Adobe Acrobat?

No. Everything happens in this page. There is nothing to install and no subscription.

### Why not convert to Word and edit there?

Conversion rebuilds the layout, which is where fonts get substituted and tables break. Editing the PDF directly leaves everything you did not touch exactly as it was.

### Can I edit a scanned PDF?

Not the text, because a scan is an image with no text in it. You can still annotate it, write on it, and sign it. OCR, which adds a text layer to scans, is coming.

### Will my formatting change?

Only where you edit. Everything else in the document is untouched, because the original page content is preserved rather than regenerated.

### Is it really free?
