# Add Text to a PDF

Adding text to a PDF sounds simple and usually is not, because a PDF has no concept of a cursor or a place to type. Text has to be positioned on the page and drawn there. Here you click where you want it and type: a click gives you a box that grows with the text, a drag gives you a fixed-width box that wraps. Font, size, colour, alignment and line height are all adjustable, using the standard PDF fonts that every viewer already has, so nothing depends on a font being installed on the reader's machine. Because the text is written into the page content rather than stored as an annotation, it renders identically in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and Firefox, and it prints. If you are replacing something rather than adding to it, the Edit text tool changes existing lines in place instead, keeping the document's own font and colour.

### Which fonts can I use?

The standard PDF fonts — Helvetica, Times and Courier, each in regular, bold, italic and bold-italic. Every viewer already has them, so nothing depends on the reader's system.

### Can I change text I have already added?

Yes. Select the box and edit it, or change its font, size, colour and alignment from the properties panel.

### Will the text print?

Yes. It is written into the page content, not stored as an annotation, so it prints exactly as displayed.

### Can I add text over an image?

Yes, anywhere on the page. Use whiteout first if you need to hide what is underneath.

### What about accented or non-Latin characters?

Accented Latin, curly quotes, dashes and the euro sign all work. Scripts outside that range, such as Chinese or Arabic, need a font that can be embedded and are not yet supported for new text boxes.
